The Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Mental Health Collective at Carleton College provides a community for BIPOC students to engage in restorative practices that support their mental health and well-being. The BIPOC Mental Health Collective is led by staff from Student Health and Counseling, and the Office of Intercultural Life. We are grateful to have support and collaboration from other Division of Student Life offices, including Office of Health Promotion.

Purpose

We recognize the intergenerational effects of racism, stress, and other social injustices at individual, community, and systemic levels; we also recognize how powerful shared spaces can be for healing. Our gatherings are intended to support community and rest.

The Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) Mental Health Collective offers a trusted space for BIPOC students to foster unity through listening, sharing and supporting each other’s mental health, wellbeing, and personal growth. This group is modeled after the BIPOC Mental Health Collective at the University of Minnesota.

Community Gatherings

The BIPOC Mental Health Collective hosts monthly Community Gatherings during the academic year. These are opportunities to meet other BIPOC students from across the college, eat lunch in community and learn simple ways to support your mental health and wellbeing. Below is an overview of typical gatherings:

  • Introductions/Check-in/Grab lunch
  • Large group overview
  • Wellness activity
  • Small group share
  • Large group share
  • Closing reflections
