Please join us to network, socialize, and re-connect. Learn from an informative and thought-provoking panel discussion with Carleton alumni from a diverse array of backgrounds and experiences who will share their perspectives regarding such questions as:

What are the risks and rewards to making a significant career change mid-career by pivoting from what you have been doing for many years to doing something quite different, whether moving from the corporate world to something smaller and different or vice versa?
What aspects of your business career are you leveraging to benefit a mission-oriented organization?
What were the motivations that led you to make dramatic career shifts even if risky economically or otherwise?
What surprised you most about reinventing yourself mid-career and trying something new and different?

The panel will be moderated by Derek Fried ’93 with panelists Bonnie Melville ’92, Fred Neher ’81, Pat Sukhum ’96, and Britt Weber ’94.

The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions as well.

About the moderator and panelists:

Derek Fried ’93: After 25 years as a commercial lender at Wells Fargo, Derek has taken advantage of a corporate restructuring last year to attempt to pivot to a second career with greater positive community impact.

Bonnie Melville ’92: Bonnie has taken professional breaks every ~5 years of her career, the past 20 of which have been in HR & Higher Ed software & services companies as the executive leading professional services teams through major technology initiatives. Breaks give her opportunities to recharge with healthy patterns, check in on values, lean into volunteer service, and enjoy that particular life phase before heading into the next professional gig. She's currently following that same playbook in her latest life phase of empty nesting.

Fred Neher ‘81: After 30 plus years in corporate finance leading global teams, Fred retired from Ecolab to join the Minnesota Historical Society as CFO. He combined his passion for Minnesota history and his strategic planning acumen to help the Society navigate through Covid and toward a sustainable future.

Pat Sukhum ’96: Pat joined Big Brothers Big Sisters Twin Cities as CEO in June 2021 after a 20+ year career in health tech startups, signaling a transition from venture-capital funded for-profit entrepreneurship to non-profit community youth development. While on the Big Brothers Big Sisters board, Pat was approached for the CEO role, truly never considering that “reinvention” prior, but now incredibly grateful for the opportunity, challenge, growth, fulfillment, and impact.

Britt Weber ’94: After 20 years working in medical device marketing, Britt made a significant career change and is now working as an elementary substitute teacher and special education paraprofessional.
